The Southern Tier Sports Report

The Southern Tier Sports Report highlights the top high school athletes in our region. This program covers sports from Section IV’s STAC conference – comprising schools from Elmira, Ithaca, and Corning areas as well as another 71 schools that compete within Section IV but aren’t part of STAC – with some exceptional athletes from each school recognized.

Boys Soccer

One of the more intriguing rivalries in boys’ soccer is that between Elmira and Horseheads. Both teams are known for hosting intense, physical matches during regular-season meetings that often lead to unpredictable rematches come playoff time.

Elmira-Horsehead’s area players have earned college recognition. Corning graduate Micah Cornfield was recently honored by being selected for Roberts Wesleyan University’s STAC West All-Star team, while Horseheads native Taylor Malone helped Alfred University win its inaugural Empire 8 Championship title – both earning themselves honorable mention in Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Southern Tier Sports Report athlete of the week awards.

Girls Soccer

IMG Academy’s girls soccer program is built upon an effective training methodology that develops, elevates, and empowers student-athletes at every level to succeed at every level. Over the past five years alone, over 65 of its high school girls’ soccer students have gone on to play at college levels- many in Division I programs!

Skyline added to its state trophy haul with Sydney Seigel’s eight saves as they defeated Woodinville 3-2 in a shootout to claim KingCo 4A honors.

Girls Volleyball

Vestal’s run to victory at the Section 4 girls’ soccer championship ended abruptly when Somers defeated them in the subregional round. Although Vestal was an exciting team all season long, their success against Section 1 Wildcats from Somers wasn’t enough.

Hubbard graduated from Ithaca College in 2008, and since that time, she has served as head coach of Elmira women’s volleyball and as the graduate assistant for both programs at Ithaca College; prior to this appointment, she served as an assistant at Ithaca High School for three years.

Corning senior Brooke Terwilliger broke a Section IV diving record, Northeast Bradford junior Gracelyn Laudermilch won District 2 cross country, and Athens freshman Connor Davidson scored six touchdowns against their biggest rival to earn them recognition as Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Athletes of the Week in Southern Tier Sports Report.
