Wine experts from UC Davis and two other West Coast universities are coming together to address the threat posed by wildfire smoke to Napa and Solano County vineyards. Scientists are working on protective measures, identifying compounds producing smoke, and installing sensors – part of a larger initiative designed to assist communities in recovering from disasters like wildfire.

Employers in southwestern Connecticut have applauded a program that assists people returning to work while meeting employers’ need for skilled employees. Platform to Employment of Bridgeport graduated its third cohort and recently brought some graduates together at Hartford for a ceremony at the state Capitol.
Beginning February 7 and running until August 7, this program allows students to explore careers and industries by visiting virtual company booths hosted by participating companies such as Odyssey Logistics & Technology Corp, Webster Bank, Santa Energy, and Aquarion Water Co. JA’s local partner Junior Achievement of Greater Fairfield County plans on implementing this initiative further in 2019.
Applicants must fall below 200% of the federal poverty guideline to qualify. Grant funds may be used for rent, mortgage, water/sewer assistance, or purchasing food/household supplies. Class A space comprised 76% of these transactions; Stamford CBD saw 90000 square feet attributed to Key Bank; Central Fairfield generated 55,000 transactions (dominated by Merritt 7 and 45 Glover deals); while Greenwich non-CBD saw 20,000 square feet.
