The Guardians remain in contention for a wild card spot and have made strides thanks to an impressive pitching staff. After taking two of three against Minnesota and claiming Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Matt Moore off waivers from the Angels, they only trail Minnesota by five games in the division race.
Glasnow had an off day against the Angels on Saturday, though not entirely due to him. His command was off – leading to six three-ball counts during the game – Kole Calhoun hitting a popup and Ramon Laureano hitting a sacrifice fly, giving them a 3-2 advantage. Still, Glasnow managed to end that inning without further incident with a 1-2-3 performance.
The Guardians have won three out of their past four games and currently stand at 39-35, only 1.5 games behind the Yankees for the AL Wild Card spot. Led by an aggressive offense and young pitching staff, their lineup and young pitching staff have kept pace with division leaders such as Glasgow. Alongside him, right-hander Cal Quantrill has provided another solid outing in recent starts, posting a 2.20 ERA/WHIP of 0.89 while striking out 50 batters during that span; look out for him against the Rays on Friday!
Cal Quantrill
On Friday, Cal Quantrill had an unfavorable start for the Cleveland Guardians’ starting pitcher and was pulled after only two outs had been recorded in his three innings of work – giving up six runs total across three innings pitched and being pulled after just two outs in the fifth inning.
Quantrill had another poor start since being activated from the injured list, giving up at least seven earned runs in both starts, with a 6.45 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through 67 innings this season – placing his position within Cleveland’s rotation at risk.
The Guardians features an impressive roster of starting pitchers, including rookies Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen, Gavin Williams, and Xzavion Curry. Quantrill could return to the starting rotation once healthy; however, his recovery timeline remains unknown as he spent most of the season on injured reserve with right shoulder inflammation.
Ervin returned a week ago but quickly experienced difficulty, surrendering 11 earned runs over 7 2/3 innings in his two most recent starts and pushing up his season ERA to 6.45. As soon as his shoulder issues flared up again, he was placed back on the disabled list for further treatment; right-hander Cody Morris was then called up as his replacement.
On Tuesday night, the Guardians again showed their impressive offensive prowess by scoring five runs against their former teams: Shane Bieber was fantastic. At the same time, Amed Rosario delivered two run-scoring singles that propelled them to an impressive 5-2 win against the Detroit Tigers.
The victory marked the Guardians’ 14th consecutive home win and raised their record to 13-3. Their offense added four runs in the fourth inning when Ezequiel Tovar and Javier Profar contributed run-scoring hits. Brenton Doyle nearly collected his first major league hit in the eighth, but the call was reversed upon review. On Saturday at Progressive Field, they’ll host Arizona Diamondbacks starting at 6:35 p.m. ET; it will also be available via Fox Sports Sun Network and MLB Extra Innings.
